Today’s question was suggested by Barbara:
Do you think any current author is of the same caliber as Dickens, Austen, Bronte, or any of the classic authors? If so, who, and why do you think so? If not, why not? What books from this era might be read 100 years from now?
Of course, I think there are writers of that caliber working today! It IS interesting to speculate who will make it into the canon by the next century. So much of it has to do with the marketplace, scholars, and what gets taught in schools. Still, I think it’s fair to say that the following three writers will still be read in the 22nd century because of their style, their subject matter, and their unique way of seeing the world:
- Toni Morrison
- Philip Roth
- Cormac McCarthy
Who do you think our grandchildren will be reading?

Thanks
Thanks

I had those three on my list as well! They were on my “safety” list, along with Updike and Flannery O’Connor…
This is a hard question because the criteria for what one calls a classic is different among people. Another reason its difficult is because it blurs the line between popularity and great literature. I do think certain current authors should and will be remembered, but it doesn’t mean they are classics, IMO.
I absolutely agree with you. You have named some great authors.
Great choices! I haven’t read any Toni Morrison yet, but I plan to soon.

I bet there will be plenty that are up there with Dickens and friends. I don’t exactly feel qualified to comment off the cuff, but I would vote for Harper Lee, even just for TKAM.
I agree with Toni Morrison. I just lover her too. Haven’t read enough of Roth or McCarthy to know for sure.
My BTT is HERE
How funny! I just asked a colleague this question yesterday. We named Roth & Morrison and a few other contenders. Getting ready to teach Sula. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Roth is a good pick. I almost included him on my list, but I was still up in the air.
I keep seeing the same names over and over. LOL! I wonder if we really have the right idea or if we are just whistling into the wind.
Roth is an excellent pick; he’s mine as well!
i’m not sure who today is as prolific as the authors mentioned…
jk rowling and stephenie meyer aren’t in the same league as the ‘classics’ authors, but their stories and the themes may speak to children, teens, and adults long into the next century.
i think morrison and john steinbeck will still be read long into the future.
happy thanksgiving, amy!!!
